چکیده

The process of endogenous respiration of two strains of bakers' yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was examined kinetically. The rate of respiration with respect to time in a non-nutrient medium was found to exhibit two phases: (a) a period of constant rate of O(2) consumption and CO(2) production (R.Q. = 1) characteristic of cells with ample concentrations of stored material; (b) a first order decline in rate of respiration with respect to time, where the rate was proportional to the concentration of some substrate, S. (R.Q. = 1 throughout second phase.) The nature of this substrate was reexamined and the evidence summarized confirms the notion that it is a carbohydrate, probably glycogen. These phases of endogenous respiration were shown to depend upon the age of the culture and the amount of substrate available.

The Metabolic Systems Involved in Dissimilation of Carbohydrate Reserves in Bakers' Yeast

Evidence is presented showing that the dissimilation of carbohydrate reserves in two strains of bakers' yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is a purely respiratory process. Endogenous respiration is KCN-labile. Our own experiments together with various accounts and data given in the literature show that the same "oxygen-transporting mechanism" functions in both endogenous and exogenous metabolism....

Enhanced Antimicrobial Effect of Yeast Mediated Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized From Baker’s Yeast

In recent science Nanotechnology is a burning field for the researchers. To meet the requirements and growing technological demand, there is a need to develop an eco-friendly approach. In the present effort, the baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) has been taken in order to assess its potential as putative candidate fungal genera for the transformation of silver nanoparticles. Silve...

THE CALCIUM BINDING SITES OF THE BAKERS' YEAST TRANSKETOLASE

The calcium binding sites of Bakers' Yeast Transketolase (TK) was elucidated by estimating the pKa values of the functional groups that bind to calcium. These pKa's were found to be 6.25 and 7.2 relating to the pKa's of the two immidazol moieties of histidine residues on the enzyme. The rate of the binding of calcium to the enzyme was obtained separately as a function of pH. Maximum values ...

Baker’s yeast catalyzed Henry reaction: Biocatalytic C-C bond formation

The C-C bond formation is an important reaction in organic synthesis to obtain value-added intermediates. Therefore, in this paper an attempt has been made to accelerate the Henry reaction (C-C bond formation) between aryl aldehydes and nitromethane using less expensive whole cell biocatalyst, baker’s yeast (BY). The scope of the methodology was also tested for the heteryl aldehyde i.e. 2-chlor...
